The 1981 Lotus Type 88 featured a very advanced approach to aerodynamics, utilizing two chassis- one for engine and driver, and a second over the top to handle downforce loads. Shown here driven by the late great Elio de Angelis, the car appeared in a few practice sessions, but ultimately was banned and never raced. The Lotus 88 remains a curiosity, and part of the rich history of F1.
